History of creation
It is rather difficult to name the exact date of the creation of the park. Lauderdale House was built on this site in 1580. Today, it is used as a tea room and a venue for various art events. The initial building frame was made of wood and has been repeatedly changed since its creation. Unfortunately, not a single element of the interior was preserved in its original form. In the 17th century, garden crops were planted on the territory near the house. In this way, the site turned into a beautiful green area. Some trees, which are more than 100 years old, may remind modern visitors of that historical period. In 1872, the park was rented by the British politician and philanthropist Sidney Waterlow. Then it became a recovering place for the patients of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. In 1889, Sidney Waterlow donated the park to the public. Lauderdale House was restored around that time. The subsequent fate of the park was quite tragic. First, a fire that happened in 1963 damaged the surrounding buildings and contributed to its decline. Secondly, the park was neglected for a long time. There were frequent cases of vandalism. Despite all the difficulties, the location was restored thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2001. Thus, Londoners witnessed the reincarnation of this beautiful place.
