A big birthday seemed a reasonable moment to start fixing that. I hope it is a lovely day and I hope you are well.

5
Years go by and I still think of you whenever certain songs come on, which is as good a reason as any to write. You have earned an unproductive day.

4
I have written and binned three of these. I hope it finds its way back to you this year, in quantity and without warning.

7
Cards are for the things we do not say out loud, so here it is: you matter to a great many people, and today is the right day to notice that.

A longer letter, when a card is not enough

1
If a card were big enough I would not be writing this on separate paper. There are a handful of things I have wanted to say for years and never found the right afternoon for. You have been, without ever announcing it, the most reliable person in my life. When things went badly you did not offer advice, you simply turned up, and I have copied that from you more often than I have admitted. I hope this next stretch is easier than the last one. Whatever it turns out to be, I am in it alongside you.

2
A milestone invites a summing-up and I am going to resist it, because your life is not finished and I would only get the summary wrong. Instead, three things. You have never once made another person feel small. You kept going through years that would have flattened most people, and you did it without making it everyone else’s weather. And you are still curious about things, which at any age is rarer than it ought to be. That is precisely what I would want said about me. Have a wonderful day.

3
I have written this out twice and thrown the first version away for being too tidy. The truth is untidier. There were years when we barely spoke and years when you carried me, and I am not sure I have ever thanked you for the second lot or apologised for the first. Today seems a reasonable moment for both. I am glad you are here. I am glad I am still on your list. I hope the year ahead is gentler than it has any obligation to be, and that we manage to see each other in it.

4
You will hate this being read out, so it is written down instead and you can do it in private. Everything solid I know about how to behave I learned by watching you handle things you did not deserve. You did it without commentary and you are doing it still. I do not think you have any idea how many people would say the same, and I do not think you would believe them if they did. So take it from one of us: this number is not a warning, it is a receipt. Many happy returns.

A few words out loud, before the food goes cold

1
Thirty seconds and then I will sit down, because I have been told to. Most of us in this room have been helped by this person at some point and have never quite got round to saying so out loud. I am saying so. To many more years of it, and to a much quieter one next.

2
I am not a speech maker, so this will be short. There is a kind of person who is always somewhere in the background of everybody else’s good days and never in the middle of their own. Today is the exception, and about time too. To you.

3
Before the food goes cold: we are here because of a number, but nobody in this room came for a number. We came for the person, and the person has had a rough few years and is still standing. Please raise a glass.

4
One minute, no longer. I have known our birthday guest long enough to know exactly how much of this attention is being tolerated rather than enjoyed. So I will simply say that it is deserved, and that we are all very glad to be here.

5
I will keep this brief. It is a strange thing to toast somebody you see every week, because the important things go unsaid precisely because there is always next week. Today there is no excuse available. Thank you for all of it.

6
Two things and then I am done. The first is thank you, on behalf of a good many more people than are in this room. The second is that we would all like considerably more of your company this year than we managed last. Many happy returns.

Questions and answers

The point is to move them, but nobody wants to be in tears at their own party. Where do you aim?

Aim for the lump in the throat and stop there, and let the location decide the rest. Anything read privately can go as far as it likes, because the person can put it down, recover and pick it up again. Anything read at a table has an audience, and an audience takes its cue from the birthday guest, so a message that tips them over leaves thirty people with nowhere to look. The mechanism is worth knowing: it is the specific detail that produces the reaction, never the praise, so control the number of details rather than softening the language. And give them a way out. Finishing on something light, or on the year ahead, hands the room permission to carry on.

You have written a letter rather than a card. Do you post it, hand it over, or read it out?

Hand it over, and do it away from the table. A letter read out loud stops being a letter and becomes a performance, which changes what the recipient is allowed to do with their face. Handing it over in a quiet moment gives them the choice of when to read it, and most people choose the following morning, which is when it lands hardest. Posting it works too, and has one specific advantage: it arrives after the party, when the house is quiet and the last of the cards have come down. What does not work is putting a long letter inside the card that gets passed around the room. Anything you would not want an aunt reading over a shoulder belongs in its own envelope.

The obvious memories are ones they have heard you tell before. Is a well-worn story still worth using?

Yes, but not by retelling it. A story everybody at the table already knows loses its effect the moment it starts, because the room recognises the shape and stops listening. Two things rescue it. The first is to name it in a single clause and go straight past — you know the story, so does everyone here, and what I actually want to say about it is this. The second is to change the vantage point: tell the part you have never told, what you were thinking at the time, what you only understood about it much later. That version is genuinely new material even though the events are familiar, and it turns a family anecdote into something addressed to one person.

Writing something warm makes you cringe. Does that mean it is the wrong text?

Usually it means the opposite. The discomfort is a reliable signal that you have written something true rather than something decorative, and decorative is what the recipient has already received twenty of. What is worth checking is the register rather than the feeling. Statements about the person, kept plain and specific, survive being read back later. Statements that reach for superlatives do not, and those are the ones that produce genuine cringe on the second reading, both for you and for them. If a line still feels overblown, cut the adjective rather than the sentence. And if you cannot bring yourself to say it aloud, that is an argument for writing it down, not for leaving it out.

Writing to a parent, how do you avoid making the whole thing about your own childhood?

Keep the memory but change who it is about. The trap is that a child’s memories are the only material to hand, so the card becomes a tour of your own upbringing with a parent standing somewhere in the background. The fix is small: after the memory, say what it showed about them rather than what it meant to you. Then add something from the present, because a parent on a milestone is being quietly reassured that they are still a person and not only a history. One line about what they are doing now, what they are good at now, what you would still ask them about, does more work than three paragraphs of nostalgia and it is the part they will read twice.

A big birthday is the one occasion where the usual card sentence gives up.
