The wishes below are kept apart so you can go straight to yours: a note for the morning, a card that thanks her properly, messages for the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom, texts from her children when the wedding is hers, a card signed by the whole family, something short to send later that day, and a few words for anyone who has been handed the microphone and would rather not hold it long.

Toggle

A note to Mum on the morning of your wedding

Thanking Mum in the card — what to write and where to stop

For the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom

When Mum is the one getting married — from her grown-up children

From the family: one card, several names on it

A message later that day, or the morning after

A few words out loud, kept short

Questions and answers

A note to Mum on the morning of your wedding

1
I have left this where you will find it while the house is still quiet. Charge your glasses.

Questions and answers

Mum ends up with a card and a note. Which one belongs to the morning and which waits for the reception?

It depends which card it is, and most weddings end up with two. Anything personal goes in the morning, before hair and makeup are finished and while there is still somebody in the house to read it: that is the hour when a note can be read twice and cried over without consequence. The card that thanks her formally, the one that sits with a gift and gets shown to relatives, belongs at the reception or with the table settings. If you only write one, choose the morning and keep the wording private rather than presentable. A note handed over at the reception competes with a room full of people and usually gets put down half-read, which is a waste of the only thing you wrote by hand all week.

There are two mothers involved. Do you write to them separately, or one card to the parents?

Separately, and it matters more than it sounds. A card addressed to the parents as a unit is easy to write and easy to forget, and it quietly hands the credit to whichever household did the visible organising. The mother of the bride and the mother of the groom will have had very different weeks and very different feelings about the day, and each deserves a text that could only have been written to her. Keep the two cards genuinely different, not one text with the names swapped — they will be compared, usually within the hour, and usually affectionately. If the fathers are also being thanked, the same rule applies. Four short honest cards beat two long balanced ones every time.

Writing to Mum on her second wedding day — do you acknowledge your father in it at all?

By leaving him out of it entirely. A wedding card is addressed to the two people getting married, and any reference to a previous marriage, however kindly meant, changes the subject on the one day that is not about it. That includes the well-intentioned versions: you deserve this after everything, it has been a long road, we are glad you found happiness at last. Each of those is really a comment on the past, and your mother will hear it that way even if nobody else does. Write about the person in front of you and the life starting today. If your father matters to the occasion, that is a separate conversation on a separate day, and it will be a better one for not being squeezed into a card.

What do you call your partner’s mother in writing when you don’t call her Mum?

Use whatever you already say out loud, and do not promote yourself on the card. If you have used her first name for years, the card uses her first name. If the household runs on titles, the card runs on titles. The mistake is reaching for Mum because the occasion feels like it demands the upgrade — it reads as a claim rather than a greeting, and it can land awkwardly with a woman who is that day watching her child leave home in a formal sense. If you want to shift to something warmer, do it in person months later, when it will be believed. On the day, the warmest opening is simply her name, followed by something specific that only you would have noticed.

Mother of the bride comes with a job list attached. Should the note thank her for the work or for something else?

Mention the work briefly, then move off it. Thanking her only for the logistics turns a lifetime into a fortnight of admin, and she will notice the size of the frame. One concrete line about the week — the calls she took, the thing she fixed without being asked — proves you were paying attention. After that, go further back: the ordinary years that nobody photographs. That is the part she will read again months later, when the seating plan has stopped mattering to anyone. It also solves a practical problem, because everyone else at that wedding will thank her for the flowers and the hotel bookings, and yours is the one card that has standing to thank her for something older.

Two completely different mornings sit behind the same search.
