Regent&#8217;s Park, rising to almost 63 metres above sea level. Its summit holds one of only six officially protected viewpoints in London: the trees around it are deliberately kept low so the central skyline stays open. The Royal Parks manage it together with The Regent&#8217;s Park, and it is a hill rather than a landscaped garden \u2014 open slope, radiating paths, and a horizon that does all the work.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The protected summit view<\/strong> \u2014 St Paul&#8217;s Cathedral, the Shard, the BT Tower, the London Eye and the Gherkin line up in one sweep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The William Blake inscription<\/strong> \u2014 York stone edging at the top carries the line &#8220;I have conversed with the spiritual sun. I saw him on Primrose Hill.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shakespeare&#8217;s Tree<\/strong> \u2014 an oak planted in 1864 for the playwright&#8217;s 300th birthday, replaced in 1964 on the 400th.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gorsedd of the Bards<\/strong> \u2014 a plaque recalls the 1792 gathering here that founded the Welsh bardic order.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unfenced open grass<\/strong> \u2014 no formal beds, no keep-off signs, room for hundreds of picnic blankets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hill Trim Trail<\/strong> \u2014 an outdoor exercise circuit, with a playground, toilets and caf\u00e9 near the foot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_inside\"><\/span>What&#8217;s inside<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The hill is deliberately simple, and that simplicity is the attraction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A summit platform with the engraved stone edging and a viewpoint indicator naming the landmarks on the horizon.<\/li>\n<li>Wide grass slopes on every side \u2014 gentle from the south, noticeably steeper on the north-western face.<\/li>\n<li>Surfaced paths radiating from the top, usable in all weather when the grass turns slippery.<\/li>\n<li>A children&#8217;s playground and public toilets near the southern foot of the hill.<\/li>\n<li>The Hill Trim Trail, a run-and-exercise circuit on the lower slopes.<\/li>\n<li>Mature limes and hawthorns along the boundary, pruned so they never rise into the sightline.<\/li>\n<li>A caf\u00e9 at the base, and a short walk across the Regent&#8217;s Canal into Regent&#8217;s Park and past London Zoo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>What to do and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Photographers<\/strong> \u2014 the whole City skyline from a single fixed point, best in low winter light.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families<\/strong> \u2014 the playground, endless running room, and the best sledging slope in north London after snow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Runners and cyclists<\/strong> \u2014 a genuine hill climb minutes from Camden, plus the trim trail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Couples and groups<\/strong> \u2014 the sunset gathering on the summit is a London ritual in its own right.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Literary walkers<\/strong> \u2014 blue plaques in the surrounding streets mark homes of W. B. Yeats, Sylvia Plath and Friedrich Engels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dog walkers<\/strong> \u2014 vast open ground, though dogs must be under control near the boundary roads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_and_practicalities\"><\/span>Getting there and practicalities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The hill sits in the London Borough of Camden, immediately north of Regent&#8217;s Park. Chalk Farm on the Northern line is the closest Underground station, with Swiss Cottage on the Jubilee line and Camden Town also within walking distance. Entry is free. On weekdays the park is open around the clock, but in recent years The Royal Parks have closed it from 10pm to 6am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the spring-to-autumn season, and on Bonfire Night and New Year&#8217;s Eve, after crowd-safety incidents. Allow an hour to climb, look and walk back down; add two more if you continue into Regent&#8217;s Park.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Clear winter days give the sharpest long view, when leafless trees open the outlook towards Hampstead in the north. Sunset is the classic slot and the summit fills accordingly; the hour after dawn is the reliable alternative, with mist sitting in the Regent&#8217;s Park basin below. Spring and early summer weekends are the busiest, and a day or two after heavy rain the air is cleanest. Check current night-closure dates before planning an evening visit.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_knowing\"><\/span>Worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The slope was part of a great hunting chase appropriated by Henry VIII. In October 1678 the magistrate Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey was found murdered here during the Popish Plot hysteria; three men named Green, Berry and Hill were hanged for it and later exonerated, and for a while Londoners called the place Greenberry Hill. In 1792 the Welsh antiquarian Iolo Morganwg convened the first meeting of the Gorsedd of the Bards on the summit. The land passed from Eton College to the Crown in 1841 and an Act of Parliament secured it as public open space in 1842. Beneath the hill runs Primrose Hill Tunnel, completed in 1838 and the first railway tunnel in London; its portals are listed. H. G.
