Its prime location offers a unique perspective right onto the very heart of London. In the 1950s, the Westminster Floating Pier was a crucial landmark, stretching along the Thames and connecting Kew to the London Docks. It held particular significance, often serving as the disembarkation point for numerous royal journeys by water. However, its most dramatic moment occurred on the night of 7th February 1955. Security guards noticed a serious leak, and despite strenuous, multi-hour attempts by Port of London Authority workers to save the structure by pumping out water, the central section began to sink. By morning, it was already half-submerged, and by noon, to the sound of Big Ben’s chimes, the pier disappeared completely beneath the river’s surface. Thankfully, no casualties were reported.

A new era for the site began with the arrival of the Westminster Millennium Pier. Its construction was a key component of a major scheme to revitalise the Thames and boost river transport, backed by the Millennium Commission. The pier was unveiled in the year 2000, alongside four other new river points: at Blackfriars, the London Eye, the Tower of London, and Millbank. This ambitious project was implemented as part of a comprehensive transport strategy involving London’s Cross River Partnership, all with the aim of making the river an integral part of the city’s infrastructure.

Even in its modern history, the Westminster Millennium Pier has seen its share of drama. In April 2012, a City Cruises vessel, the Millennium City, suffered an incident after a suspected collision with a bridge, damaging its bow. The boat, carrying 35 passengers and crew, ran aground on a submerged obstruction near the pier following an evening entertainment cruise. Thanks to the prompt response of the emergency services, there were no injuries and no pollution to the river.

Following official approval in 2016, the Westminster Millennium Pier underwent significant upgrades to enhance its functionality. The main focus of this modernisation was to optimise operations for Thames Clippers, one of the river’s essential transport providers. Previously, the company used a temporary kiosk right on the pontoon, but its position caused logistical headaches. The new solution involved relocating the kiosk to the Victoria Embankment, right next to the permanent ticket offices. This not only made ticket sales more accessible but also ensured that tourists and locals could easily access information services before boarding the vessels.

A further boost to the pier’s development occurred in 2025 with the opening of a new launch point at Westminster Millennium Pier. This significantly improved passenger comfort and made the popular Thames pleasure cruises even more appealing. The space was fitted out with comfortable seating areas and a dedicated zone where passengers could review and immediately print photographs taken during their river adventures by the Thames RIB Experience team. Furthermore, they gained access to the company’s exclusive merchandise, providing another welcome addition to the overall travel experience.

Mindtrip

The Importance and Impact of Westminster Millennium Pier

It is from the Westminster Millennium Pier that numerous daily sightseeing cruises depart, offering visitors a panoramic view of London from the water and allowing them to see its legendary landmarks from a fresh angle.
