The first heat preservation technologies were based on stone fortifications. They allowed people to accumulate the heat from the hearth. Later, a similar principle was used during the construction of fireplaces in many castles of Great Britain. It was also closely related to the invention of the chimney. Later, this technology contributed to the emergence of the first metal ovens. Their main feature was cast iron furnaces, which were connected with each other. However, it could heat only one room. Therefore, the fireplace remained one of the most popular sources of heating for a long time. William Cook’s presentation of the steam heating concept was an important contribution to the history of the heating development not only in London but also in the whole of Great Britain. Subsequently, the proposed system was used as a foundation for creating further developments. In 1793, the English inventor William Strutt designed a building that was heated by a new type of central furnace. This technology quickly spread throughout the country, so after a while, it became very popular in London.

Although the idea of the integral heating system arose as early as the beginning of the 18th century, the first significant results of experiments became noticeable about 100 years later. Then the Scottish inventor James Watt introduced a system that began to be implemented throughout London. It was based on the steam that came from the central boiler and due to high pressure, circulated and spread evenly in the built-in pipes. It was similar to modern heating systems. However, it took time for scientists to replace steam with water. Such a decision became one of the positive results of the Industrial Revolution, which was spreading at that time not only in England but also in many other European countries. Then engineers came to the conclusion that water can retain heat much better. The first water supply systems were characterised by low pressure and large pipes. Of course, it was quite inconvenient, so later, the system was improved. Thus, one of the first modern central heating systems appeared in London in the 1830s. It was installed by the American engineer Angier Perkins. He devoted a large part of his life to researching this issue in Great Britain. The principle of the new system also depended on high pressure (as well as the method of heating with steam). However, at that time, pressure became the main driving force for distributing hot water through small-diameter pipes. The highlight of the invention was the threaded connection, which could withstand high pressure.

Modern heating system

Nowadays, London can boast of the most developed heating system in the world. There are many ideas regarding the transition to alternative energy sources in the city. Therefore, eco-friendly technologies of heating and heat retaining (such as the installation of solar panels) are becoming more frequent.

People have always tried to find effective heating technologies.
